This book was an exercise in Typography. Attention was given to font family, size, leading and how text is laid out on the page via single and multi column paragraphs, with and without justified text.

I took this book as an opportunity to see what a professionally printed, print on demand, book would look like. I enjoy documenting my work and would someday like to have a timeline of my life in book form. I see this project as version alpha, 0.1, from which more will come.

It also serves as an excuse to use many of my own fractal renders, which can be seen on all introduction pages and the cover.

Oak Leaf Trail Accordion Book

The goal: use type and image to direct the viewer via narrative, hierarchy and organized elements of factual and contextual information.

A map of Milwaukee was chosen as the backdrop to contain the Oak Leaf Trail spanning the book front to back. Elements contained within the accordion book relate to activities on the trail or locations found near the trail such as the Summerfest Grounds, Discovery World and the Milwaukee Art Museum.

Axiom Equippers

Axiom Equippers required a product catalog which could be controlled internally and would be extremely easy to use. A custom content editor was created in WordPress via css based around the client’s products and technical ability.

Sidebar navigation composed of user built product tree. WordPress categories are used to build hierarchical product tree which Axiom can easily add to and remove from.

ISEA 2012 Drupal Site

The International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA2012) is a Drupal site used for the collection and organization of proposed works by artist around the world. The submissions were collected with the Webforms module to be later juried by a custom built PHP platform.

Energy Life Cycle of Coal

The Great Lakes infographic highlights the lifecycle of coal, from extraction to use, and the dependency of the Great Lakes states on Wyoming coal.

The map of Wyoming and the Great Lakes connected by railways creates a narrative of process and shows dependency from one region to another. Color is used heavily to unite spatially diffused data objects; connecting, for example, red colored power plant locations on the map to red data relating to power production.

Energy Life Cycle Icons

We often represent a person’s roll with a figurative example of what hat they wear. As icons are also meant to be representative, literal hats are used to describe a particular facet of the energy life cycle. To connect the hats to energy use, they are placed atop light bulbs, the culturally recognized symbol of inefficient and excessive energy use.

chiefschoice.org is an eCommerce website built on the WordPress CMS. The site Features a “What’s New” blog, shopping cart with UPS liverates and PayPal checkout.

WordPress shopping cart plugin, WP e-Commerce was used to power the user checkout process. WP e-Commerce was also used to connect to UPS liverates for live shipping quotes and to PayPal for credit card payment processing.

Man’s Modern Muscle

The heart’s symbolism as an essential life organ combined with the recognizable tips of a gas nozzle were chosen because of their simple and immediately identifiable qualities. The reverse style of dark ground with white figure and text adds a feeling of “shock” to the message, while red replaces black to call on the symbolic nature of red as danger.
